Energy-efficient makeover brightens US Vets facility in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A transitional facility for homeless veterans in Phoenix has gotten an energy efficient make-over.
“This is huge for us,” said John Scott, M.S.W, executive director for U.S. Vets Phoenix. “We expect to save about $40,000 a year in energy costs.”
Courtesy of Arizona Public Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, through its EPA ENERGY STAR Program, the main building and adjoining apartment units — which were built in the 1960’s — have been upgraded.
The improvements include replacing inefficient windows, light bulbs, insulation, and refrigerators in all of the 135 units with high efficiency ENERGY STAR products. New commercial-grade washers and dryers will be installed in the common area for all veterans to use. In addition, a new ENERGY STAR flat-panel HDTV will be installed in the rec room.
The facility is located west of downtown Phoenix and houses 135 veterans.
