PHOENIX — Several same-sex couples in the Phoenix area are spending Monday at the Wrigley Mansion sharing their stories with a panel of judges who will select the finalists for a $60,000 wedding and reception.

The winners will be chosen in an online vote at the landmark venue’s Facebook page. The grand prize includes the dresses or tuxes, cake, music, up to 100 guests and an overnight stay at the Royal Palms Resort.

Madison Desoto and Denise Sowers have been together for three and a half years. Desoto never thought she’d see the day come when she could legally marry in Arizona.

“With Arizona being one of the more conservative states we were concerned that Arizona would be one of the last to be dragged screaming and kicking to marriage equality. And yet here we are,” she said.

Winners will be announced Nov. 5; the wedding will be held Nov. 13.

Joshua Johnson has been with his partner Brent Chappelow for more than two years and is hoping their story will convince judges to make them finalists.

“It would take us countless hours of work to get something like this, so this is the perfect opportunity for us,” he said.

We want to hear from you.
