PHOENIX — Major League’s Baseball World Series may be between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals this year, but it has two Phoenix-area mayors squaring off.
Both teams call the Valley home during spring training, so the mayors of Scottsdale, where the Giants play, and Surprise, spring home of the Royals, have made a friendly wager.
“It’s exciting to have two Cactus League teams in the World Series, and I thought this would be a fun way for both of our cities to celebrate the success of our teams,” said Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott. “Plus, I am confident our Royals will take the crown.”
The terms? The losing mayor has to wear a shirt and hat of the opposing team to a spring training game next year at the opposing team’s Valley stadium and post a photo on social media.
“I look forward to seeing Mayor Wolcott at my side next spring, adorned in Giants’ orange and black, when we welcome the World Champions back to Scottsdale,” Mayor Jim Lane said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Mayor Lane in blue, Royal Blue, that is, at our beautiful Surprise Stadium,” Wolcott said.
