Campaign rewards safe teen drivers with celebrity concert

Car crashes have been the leading cause of death for teens for more than three decades, according to State Farm Insurance.
The company has kicked off the “Celebrate My Drive campaign”. The educational program coincides with National Teen Driver Safety week which runs until Oct. 25.
“We want to inform and educate teens about the risks involved when they get behind the wheel,” said State Farm Agent Michael G. Velazquez. “The campaign has been extremely successful.”
According to 2013 data provided by State Farm, nearly 50 percent of crashes for 16 to 17-year-old drivers occur between the hours of 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. nationally. In Arizona, the data revealed most teens’ claims occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 5:59 p.m.
The Celebrate My Drive campaign puts the focus on teen driver safety by hosting activities and events in communities across the country. High schools have an opportunity to get involved by encouraging teens to commit to drive safely on behalf of their school. Schools with the most teen participation have the chance to win big bucks.
“We are giving away 90 $25,000 grants, (and) we are giving 10 $100,000 grants,” said Velazquez.
There will be two grand prizes awarded. The winning high schools will get a private concert by Grammy-nominated The Band Perry.
