LISTEN: Mormon Tabernacle Choir seeking online help for special Easter performance

PHOENIX — Attention all those want to sing or perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: You’re going to get your chance.

The choir announced it will accept online submissions from singers worldwide to add into its Easter performance.

Submitting an entry is simple: Singers must record themselves singing one of four parts — soprano, alto, tenor or bass — of the chorus from George Frideric Handel’s “Hallelujah” and upload it to YouTube. Once the clip is uploaded, it can be submitted online.

“Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is an extremely powerful oratorio, especially the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus,” Ryan Murphy, associate music director for the choir, said in a release. “It is well-known and well loved. It’s an honor for us to perform it, and we are delighted to extend the invitation to join us to singers all over the world.”

The submissions will be compiled to make a virtual choir, which will likely be one of the largest ever created.

Several musicians and YouTube stars, such as Peter Hollens and Tiffany Alvord, are expected to participate.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this experience,” Hollens said in a release. “Singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has always been a dream of mine, and since I don’t live in Utah, this is definitely the next best thing! For anyone who is considering it,opportunities like this are so rare, and it would be a serious shame to miss.”

The choir has uploaded sheet music, sing-alongs and conducting videos to its website for those who need guidance.

Entries will be accepted through March 1 and the virtual choir video will be released March 13.

We want to hear from you.
