Toddler dies after being left in family friend’s hot car

PHOENIX — A 3-year-old Phoenix boy died Sunday, a day after being overlooked and left in a hot car for at least three hours.

Police said Hayden Nelson was left in a car by a family friend, rushing to get to church choir practice. When he was found, the toddler was no longer breathing. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The high reached 97 degrees on Saturday.

The family friend had brought Hayden and two more children to a church near 16th Street and Broadway Road, where she and his mother were rehearsing.

The friend had volunteered to look after the boy so his mother could go to rehearsal early. The woman told police she had been in a hurry getting the children out of the car.

Charges could be filed, police said.
