Arizona’s 2014 monsoon was record-setting wet

PHOENIX — The 2014 monsoon season in Arizona was a wet one.
It was one of the wettest on record and destroyed the Phoenix-area record for rainfall received in a single day when 3.3 inches fell at Phoenix Sky Harbor.
Despite all the record rain, the airport recorded the average number of rainy days. So what happened?
In short, Mexican hurricanes happened. Hurricane Norbert was to blame for the record rain in Phoenix. Hurricane Odile threatened the Valley with more rain before blowing into southern Arizona and on to New Mexico.
Add these storms to already expected rainfall, and you have the makings of a record monsoon season.
