PHOENIX — American Airlines will soon begin flights between Phoenix and a small city in Oregon.

The Redmond Municipal Airport announced Friday that the airline would begin a daily nonstop flight between it and Phoenix in June.

Tickets for the new route go on sale Sunday.

The airport said the new route will be flown by a Bombardier CRJ-7000, which can carry up to 67 passengers at a time.

A daily flight will leave Redmond about noon and land in Phoenix about 2:20 p.m. The return will depart the Valley at 8:15 p.m. and arrive back in central Oregon about 10:20 p.m.

“This will be a valuable route for Central Oregonians,” Roger Lee, executive director of Economic Development for Central Oregon, said in a press release.

The airport said the route was the result of a $500,000 U.S. Department of Transportation grant to attract air service.

“Phoenix was the number one ‘new market’ for air service development due to its potential for both business development and tourism,” Alana Hughson with the Central Oregon Visitors Association said.

Redmond is about 125 miles east of Eugene.
