Court grants Jodi Arias’ request to be her own attorney

PHOENIX — A Maricopa County judge approved a request from convicted killer Jodi Arias on Monday to become her own attorney.

Arias made the request while appearing in court. Despite disagreeing, Judge Shirley Stevens approved the move.

Hayden also reported that Arias’ former counsel would serve her in an advisory role.

The move means Arias will now go against prosecutor Juan Martinez during the penalty phase of her trial. She is eligible for the death penalty.

The trial is scheduled to resume Sept. 8.
