PHOENIX — A road-rage incident on a Phoenix-area freeway Monday left a Jeep with bullet holes and a flat tire, Arizona highway police said.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said no one was injured in the shooting on northbound Loop 101 near McDowell Road around 6:25 a.m.

“This isn’t random shooting … it was definitely a confrontation,” Capt. Damon Cecil said, making a reference to the shootings on Valley freeways last summer. A man has been charged in four of those 11 shootings.

The driver of the Jeep told authorities that another car was blocking attempts to pass it. When the Jeep’s driver eventually managed to get around the other vehicle, that driver stuck an arm out of the window and began shooting.

The shooter’s car was described as maroon or possibly burnt orange and “boxy-style” but no description of the suspect.

The Jeep’s driver was able to pull off the road to call authorities.

Cecil said at least one witness had called in a tip but more would be welcome at 602-223-2212.

“You always have that possibility of having collateral damage (in a road rage incident). … crashing into other vehicles. It’s an extremely dangerous situation.”

We want to hear from you.
