PHOENIX — Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum announced the end of his presidential campaign on Wednesday.

Santorum tweeted “So thankful & grateful for your support,” but stated it was not “our year.”  The former Republican presidential candidate also announced his endorsement for Marco Rubio.

Rubio came in third in the Iowa caucus, nearly beating out businessman Donald Trump in the first major run of the 2016 presidential election season.

Santorum ran for office in 2012 and defeated Republican candidates in Iowa after visiting the state’s 99 counties in a pickup truck.

Santorum advocated for the stop of illegal immigration and aimed to increase the minimum wage during his presidential run.
