Valley rescue running low on water, hot weather supplies

Jun 3, 2014, 12:42 PM | Updated: 12:42 pm

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Rescue Mission has issued a “code red” for heat relief supplies.

As temperatures top 110 degrees or more in the Valley, the non-profit agency said it is running dangerously low on water to give to the homeless and elderly shut-ins.

“We need food, water, heat-relief supplies and hygiene kits,” said Cliff Danley.

Danley, a former homeless man, drives the Phoenix Rescue Mission’s Hope Coach and hands out water and other supplies to homeless people wherever he finds them.

One man that he came across on Monday sticks out in his mind.

“We came up on an individual who was literally passed out under a shade tree in a parking lot with his mouth wide open,” Danley said.

He was able to revive the man and give him cold water that he desperately needed.

Anyone can drop off water Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the mission’s warehouse, located at 1468 N. 26th Ave. in Phoenix.

Valley cities, churches and businesses are also helping to collect heat relief items. For a complete list of drop-off locations and what items are needed, go to phoenixrescuemission.org.

We want to hear from you.
