PHOENIX — A man was killed early Tuesday morning after a six-hour standoff with Phoenix police.
Officers were called to a home near 17th and Peoria avenues about 6 p.m. Monday by a woman who said her brother had fired a handgun inside of his home. She told police she was unsure if he was firing at her, so she fled and called 911.
The woman said her brother was acting strangely prior to pulling the trigger.
“[His sister] said his eyes looked funny,” Phoenix police officer James Holmes said.
When police arrived, the 39-year-old suspect allegedly refused to leave the home and told officers he would shoot anyone who entered. A negotiator tried for six hours to convince the suspect to leave the home.
Just after midnight, the suspect exited the home. He allegedly pointed the gun at his head before pointing it officers, who opened fire.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are unsure if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the suspect’s actions.
The suspect has not been identified.
“At this point, we don’t have a lot of history with this young man,” Holmes said.
