PHOENIX — They may have not won the big prize, but a few Arizonans woke up significantly richer on Thursday morning.

The Arizona Lottery said four Arizonans won $1 million Wednesday night as part of the largest Powerball prize in history. One of the winners was for Arizona Power Play, meaning his or her prize is doubled to $2 million.

Arizona also had two $1 million winners in Saturday’s drawing.

The estimated $1.6 billion jackpot was won by people in three states — Tennessee, Florida and California. The winners will split the pot and have a choice of annual payments or one really, really big check.

A majority of the country went a little Powerball crazy over the past week as the jackpot hit dizzying figures. People talked around office water coolers about what they planned to do with the cash and some people even crossed state lines to get tickets.

“This past Saturday was our single-largest day of Powerball sales ever — $12.3 million just in Powerball tickets,” Tony Bouie with the Arizona Lottery said.

The estimated jackpot amounts had risen steadily since Nov. 4, when it was reset at $40 million. Texas Lottery executive director Gary Grief has said this Powerball offered “absolutely” the world’s biggest jackpot.
