Winner, winner, chicken dinner: Numbers revealed for $1.6B Powerball jackpot

PHOENIX — You’ve been waiting all week and now the day has finally arrived: The numbers for the winning $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot have been revealed.

According to the Arizona Lottery, the winning Powerball numbers are: 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and 10.

Officials with the California Lottery announced right away a winning ticket was sold in southern California. A couple of hours later it was verified that there were three winning tickets in total. The other two came from Florida and Tennessee.

If you are the one in more than 292 million who became the lucky bearer of those — or most of —  those set of numbers, you have up to 60 days to claim your prize in either a lump sum or annuity payments over 30 years, according to Arizona Lottery.

To claim your prize, you must sign the back of your ticket, fill out a Winner Claim Form and submit both either in person at an Arizona Lottery office in either Phoenix or Tucson or through the mail to P.O. Box 2913, Phoenix, Arizona, 85062.

For those who participated in an office pool, winners must all be 21 or older, choose the same payment option and submit individual claim forms alongside the winning ticket and a photocopy of their government-issued ID.

And thanks to a rule passed in July 2015, the identities of winners of more than $600 are confidential for up to 90 days from the date the prize is awarded and is kept off of the public record, but winners can waive their confidentiality voluntarily.

But be warned: If you end up winning the $1.6 billion jackpot here in Arizona, you could be taking home a mere lump sum of $697.5 million or 30 years of $35 million payments, coming out to about $1.05 billion after taxes.

This $1.6 billion jackpot was the largest in U.S. history and has been accumulating since Nov. 7, when the jackpot was set to its minimum of $40 million.

A growing number of people have been lining up to purchase tickets from convenience stores all over the state.

Arizona Lottery spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez said ticket sales in Arizona averaged more than $20,000 per minute, with 3,700 transactions occurring per minute ahead of Wednesday’s drawing.

Rosie’s Den, a small convenience store at the Arizona-Nevada border, saw wait times as long as an hour and 15 minutes just to purchase a ticket, since lottery tickets are not available in Nevada.

Although several lucky winners/overnight billionaires have already come forth — including four now-millionaires from Arizona —  it has not stopped others from fantasying what they would do with the money.

For those who hope to solve nationwide poverty with their winnings, unfortunately that would not be possible.. A photo went viral on Facebook last week for claiming the latest Powerball jackpot could solve poverty in the U.S., but alas, the math was just a tad bit off.

Even if you were not a winner tonight, no worries. The next Powerball drawing will take place Saturday, Jan. 16.
