PHOENIX — An early-morning road accident on a West Valley freeway sent a man to the hospital in serious condition Wednesday.
Loop 303 between U.S. 60 and El Mirage was shut down for over four hours after a delivery truck hit a guard rail, tearing out over 100 feet before it went off the road, rolling a few times.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman said the impact was so severe the driver lost a leg at the scene.
The Wickenburg Sun confirmed that the driver, Mark Hranek, 55, worked for the newspaper.
The freeway was reopened in both directions around 6:30 a.m.
