PHOENIX — Longtime south Phoenix community activist and school board member Norma Munoz has been named to the Arizona House of Representatives to replace Ruben Gallego.
The announcement Monday came 10 days after Gallego resigned to concentrate on his run for U.S. Congress.
Munoz, who serves on the Roosevelt Elementary School Board, was unanimously approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
“I decided there was an opportunity to move forward and do a little more for my community,” Munoz said in a statement.
A Democrat, Munoz has been active on the school board since 1994. She has filed paperwork to run for the House seat for the 2014 primary.
