Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer recalls day of Tucson shooting on fifth anniversary

PHOENIX — Arizona’s previous governor reflected on the tragedy in Tucson five years after the shooting.
Six people were left dead and 13 were injured including former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.
“It was almost unbelievable, it was something that you couldn’t even really comprehend,” Gov. Jan Brewer said.
The former governor said she was preparing for her upcoming State of the State address when she received word of the shooting.
In her own words, Jan. 8, 2011 was one of the toughest days Brewer faced while holding office.
“It is so emotional, it is just so emotional and unbelievable,” she said.
Among the dead was an 11-year-old, Christina Taylor Green.
“There is nothing that you can really do or say other than to share your grief with one another.”
The shooting in Tucson left the state and the nation in shock.
Brewer said it was still difficult to talk about that day.
“Every time I see Gabby Giffords or her husband on television or I read something about it and all the debates going on about gun control and mental health, you always revert back in your mind in regards to that situation that terrible tragedy,” she said.
