PHOENIX — A fatal traffic accident knocked down power lines Monday morning and forced cancellation of classes at a nearby school.
Phoenix police said the single-vehicle rollover at 28th Street and McDowell Road happened about 1 a.m. in front of Creighton Elementary School. Yusef Watkins-Hill, 31, died in the accident.
Approximately 800 students were sent home for the day. Initially, school officials said classes would be delayed, then decided to cancel altogether.
Police said Watkins-Hill may have been traveling between 80-90 mph when he crashed into the pole. The car eventually hit a retaining wall near the school.
McDowell has been closed between 27th and 29th streets for the investigation.
