PHOENIX — The University of Arizona has canceled a class field trip originally slated for Thanksgiving weekend after terror attacks in Paris.
The cancellation was handed down by school provost Dr. Andrew C. Comrie. The trip to Paris was for an African-American studies class planning on taking a study tour. The trip was scheduled to run from Nov. 20 to Nov. 29.
Jill Calderon with the University of Arizona’s Global Initiatives Program said the school’s students currently studying abroad in Paris are safe. She said they are keeping in touch with their students through social media and email.
“[We have] a lot of systems and policies and resources available to students and parents,” she said. “We’ve been tapping into those from the moment we heard about the attacks.”
Calderon said the school is keeping a constant eye on events in Europe. She said there is always the possibility that future study abroad programs could be affected.
“We are open to changes if we need to make changes to keep our students safe,” Calderon said.
As of right now, UA’s spring semester study abroad programs to France are going ahead as planned.
More than 120 people were killed in the attacks in the French capital. Nearly triple that were wounded.
