PHOENIX — A Phoenix food bank and its volunteers are giving local families Thanksgiving help, putting together and distributing thousands of donated food boxes from St. Mary’s Food Bank.

Traffic was backed up for blocks Monday morning near 31st Avenue and Thomas Road, where people flocked to the food bank to get turkeys and Thanksgiving trimmings.

The big operation couldn’t be pulled off without the help of volunteers, including Trevor Borsak, who said it felt great to help so many people have a nice meal.

“There’s a lot of people out here and I didn’t expect this many people. It’s good for the community to help,” he said.

St. Mary’s will be distributing the boxes until 3 p.m. Monday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Another volunteer, Jenny Watts, said donating time is a great feeling.

“It’s a great feeling to be selfless and get out here and do things for others,” Watts said.

St. Mary’s expects to pass out 10,000 boxes through Wednesday.

We want to hear from you.
