Fire burning near Yarnell reaches 5 percent containment

PHOENIX — About 100 firefighters are battling a 450-acre blaze Monday near Yarnell, and have managed 5 percent containment.

The lightning-caused French Gulch Fire is about 6 miles east of Yarnell and moving north, northeast and was not threatening homes in Yarnell or Peeples Valley.

The fire started Saturday.

The terrain is extreme and Arizona State Forestry said there is no road access to transport crews so they will use helicopters for water drops.

Between 2-4 p.m. on Sunday,
the blaze made a 300-acre run across the oak brush, grass, chaparral and juniper vegetation.

Nineteen Granite Mountain Hotshots died in June battling the Yarnell Hill Fire.
