MCSO putting abused dogs up for adoption

Aug 2, 2013, 12:55 PM | Updated: 12:55 pm

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is hoping some dogs that it has been caring for will soon have a new home.

They are called MASH dogs. They were abused and taken away from their owners. After MCSO took custody of the animals, inmates have been feeding and caring for them at the department’s animal MASH unit inside the Fourth Avenue Jail.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will bring seven of the dogs to an adoption event Saturday being held between 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, located at 15600 N. Hayden Rd. Hawaiian barbeque will be served during the event.

One of the dogs that will be there is a 6-year-old female pit bull mix named Ripley.

“We got her in 2009, and she was adopted in 2011, but the woman who adopted her passed away in the past year,” said MCSO Detention Officer Monica Rushing.

She said the woman’s husband is a truck driver, and he returned Ripley to MCSO because he could no longer care for her.

“When we adopt animals out, we let those adopting know that if, for any reason, they can no longer care for the animals, we will take them back, no questions asked,” Rushing said.

There is a $100 charge to adopt a dog.
