PHOENIX — It could be a first for Phoenix. City leaders are considering using $1.5 million in state transportation funding to make the city more bicycle friendly. The plan is part of the city’s budget which council members are expected to vote on Tuesday.
“Biking and walking are as important as vehicular traffic in the advancement of our city,” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton told KTAR.
Stanton says companies and employees want to be in cities with options other than driving.
“They want to live near where they work, they want to live near where they shop, they want to live near where they get entertained and so being in a more walkable, bikeable environment is a huge portion of that.”
The plan includes:
• $150,000 for an overlay project on Indian School Road from 19th Avenue to Interstate 17
• $350,000 for a consultant to develop a citywide bike plan
• $500,000 for citywide bike facilities
• $500,000 to improve bike-share locations which are expected to launch in December
