Near drowning leaves 17-month-old in critical condition

GLENDALE — A tragic accident in Glendale has left a 17-month-old child in “extremely critical condition.”

The young boy was found on Wednesday evening floating face down in a pool at a relative’s home.

He was last seen inside the house, with the doors to access the pool closed, but a doggy-door may have allowed the child access to the pool.

“Right now we believe that the child got out through that doggy-door,” said Michael Young, a public information officer with the Glendale Fire Department.

It is not known exactly how long the child was in the pool, but Young said it was an estimated 15 minutes.

“When he was pulled from the pool he did not have a pulse and was not breathing,” Young said.

The family administered CPR, as well as the first responders when they arrived on the scene.

Young said the child was airlifted to a nearby hospital and remains in extremely critical condition.

With summer nearby, it is important to make sure there is adequate pool safety.

“People need to be vigilant with children around water,” Young said.

Young said to remember the A-B-C’s of water safety: “A” for adult supervision, “B” for barriers around pools, and “C” for classes on swimming and safety.
