Walmart opens first store on ASU campus

May 15, 2013, 5:00 AM | Updated: 5:00 am

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State University students who want to make a quick run to Walmart after class won’t have to go far after Wednesday.

Walmart opened its first location on ASU’s Tempe campus at Apache Boulevard and Rural Road.

The new store is known as Walmart on Campus.

“The Walmart on Campus is a small format. It’s about 5,000-square-feet,” said Walmart Spokeswoman Delia Garcia. For comparison, the Walmart Supercenter in Paradise Valley is about 100,000-square-feet.

Garcia said the store has a lot of things that students need while living on campus.

“The on-campus shopper is looking for things like breakfast on the go, health and beauty items, pharmacy services, refreshments and food items that they can prepare in their dorm rooms,” she said. “We’ve got that here at the Walmart on Campus.”

The store, which will have 10 employees and be open seven days a week, carries ASU clothing and sandals, chargers and other small electronic items. It does not sell liquor.

Garcia said this is the second Walmart of its kind in the country.

“The first opened at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 2011,” she said. “It’s been very popular with students and on-campus shoppers. This is the second store and a third store is expected to open this year, in 2013, at Georgia Tech.”

Garcia said ASU was chosen because of the Tempe campus’ large student population. Over 72,000 students attend classes there.
