PD: Men arrested after trying to steal unmarked police car

TEMPE, Ariz. — Two men were arrested Saturday on suspicion of trying to steal an unmarked police car.

Two officers were sitting in the vehicle in a parking lot near Baseline Road and Butte when Paul Gardener and Chad Leakey approached.

Gardener got into the back of the vehicle and realized it was the back seat of a police car. He and Leakey fled the scene but were quickly apprehended.

After being searched, Gardener was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and stolen mail. Both men were linked to other vehicle thefts in the area.

Gardener was charged with one count of burglary, three counts of attempted burglary and possession of a dangerous drug.

Leakey was charged with one count of burglary and three counts of attempted burglary.
