Sinema working to keep student debt interest low

PHOENIX — U.S. Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema is on a mission to help struggling college students and their families.
She met with parents, students and faculty at Arizona State University on Wednesday to get testimonials of what life is like for them and the challenges they face financially.
“I want Congress to take action to keep those loan rates stable,” she said. “Today, I’m going to start hearing from folks and talking to them about what matters to them and how we can get Congress to take action.”
According to Sinema, on July 1, if Congress doesn’t act, student loan rates will double. The current interest rate is 2.4 percent. If doubled, that would translate into roughly an additional $1,000 per year out-of-pocket for Arizonans who have student loan debt.
