PHOENIX — Hundreds of immigrant workers and advocates picketed and marched from the Arizona Capitol to demand fair treatment for employees at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.
“If you have a business where a disproportionate number of your employees are people of color and immigrants, and they are the ones getting injured, that’s problematic,” said Daria Ovide with Unite Here. “When people have a rights on the job, that kind of treatment doesnt’ have to continue.”
According to organizers, the local event, combining worker and immigrant rights groups, is one of many across the country using May 1 to press for rights for immigrant workers as part of a bill to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.
May 1st is observed as International Worker’s Day.
