It’s a boy!
An Andean bear cub born at the Phoenix Zoo in early January was confirmed Wednesday to be a healthy boy. The cub, still unnamed, also took his first steps recently.
The cub’s mother, 17-year-old Rio, appears to be in good health as well.
It will still be several months before zoo visitors can see the cub in its exhibit.
Zoo staff was unable to inspect the cub as Andean bears tend to stay in their dens with new cubs for extended periods of time.
Andean bears are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.
