Man killed by falling horse in Grand Canyon

Mar 27, 2013, 4:18 PM

A Colorado man was killed Tuesday after the horse he was riding landed on him after the pair fell off a cliff.

The victim, identified as 46-year-old William Kevin Hagins of Colorado Springs, Colo., was riding from the Havasupai Village to Hilltop with a hired guide, his wife, his 5-year-old child and another couple.

As the caravan of horses began moving up a trail, Hagins’ horse appeared to take an unstable step and the pair slipped off the 12-foot cliff.

Hagins landed in a dry river bed and the horse landed on top of him.

The horse walked away from the fall.

Hagins’ body was taken to the Coconico County Medical Examiner’s Office. Deputies are investigating.
