Multiple dead in shooting at Oregon community college

Ten people were killed Thursday and seven were wounded in a shooting on an Oregon community college campus, a police official told a media outlet.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer by the The Oregonian, was killed by police Thursday afternoon, according to officials.
Shots were first reported about 10:40 a.m. Arizona time at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about a three-hour drive south of Portland.

“We locked our door, and I went out to lock up the restrooms and could hear four shots from the front of campus,” UCC Foundation Executive Director Dennis O’Neill told the newspaper.
The victims were sent to different local hospitals.

Students and faculty members were being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
Authorities offered no immediate word on the Mercer’s motive and said they were investigating.
Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students. It was the first week of school.
