Firefighters’ coat drive to aid kids in shelters

As fall turns into winter, it gets cold at night even in the Valley of the Sun.

Staying warm is a luxury for the less fortunate so Phoenix firefighters are stepping in with a coat drive for children in homeless and domestic violence shelter.

Firefighters are spending Friday at Desert Ridge Marketplace collecting coats at the Sandbar Mexican Grill. Fire Capt. Rich Bauer is hoping to collect more than 2,000 jackets. The coats will be sent to the Salvation Army in Phoenix, where children will be able to choose for themselves.

The collection runs until 7 p.m. By early morning 200 coats had been dropped off.
