Tempe police are knocking on the doors of sex offenders on Wednesday to remind them to behave on Halloween, a holiday that could bring many kids to their door.
“Making sure that they are in compliance of their registration requirements and that they are in compliance, if they are on probation, of their probation,” said Tempe Police Lt. Scott Smith.
Tempe police have their sights set on level-two and level-three sex offenders, specifically those who have committed crimes against children.
Smith said it is important for parents to know that some sex offenders are allowed to hand out candy.
“It’s case by case,” he said. “If someone is not subject to specific criteria, they may in fact, be allowed to do that.”
Information is power, said police, who encourage parents to take five minutes before the kids head out to trick-or-treat to research the areas where sex offenders live and stay clear.
“Don’t even subject yourself to that risk,” said Smith.
