One hiker was killed and two more were seriously injured when they were attacked by bees on Monday.
Joshua R. Ruzsa, 19, died after falling off a cliff at Echo Canyon on Camelback Mountain trying to escape the bees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The surviving hikers, whose names haven’t been released but are 18 and 20 years old, were stung at least 300 times each and and were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Both had managed to find an alcove for protection and heard Ruzsa, who had climbed above them, shouting for help as he fell.
A helicopter’s downdraft was used in an attempt to blow the bees away from the hikers.
