Even though it’s on the other side of the country, Hurricane Sandy is having an impact on the Valley.
According to flightaware.com, 79 flights to and 80 flights from Sky Harbor Airport have been affected by the storm since Monday. Nationwide, airlines have cancelled nearly 9,000 flights.
Sky Harbor spokeswoman Julie Rodriguez said New York, New Jersey, Washington and Philadelphia airports are keeping planes on the ground for now.
A handful of passengers spent Sunday night at Sky Harbor after learning their flights back east had been cancelled.
The airport is recommending that travelers to the East Coast check with their airlines before leaving for the airport.
