Food trucks as terror threats? Phoenix mayor not overreacting

Oct 29, 2012, 7:13 AM | Updated: 7:14 am

PHOENIX — According to a new report, food trucks should be a concern for Homeland Security.

Ordering lunch from a food truck is becoming a more popular lunch alternative to many in major cities across the country.

The report from the New York City Fire Department said food trucks, like the ones at Food Truck Fridays in downtown Phoenix, could serve as attractive breeding grounds for terrorists.

It said terrorists could park the trucks in high profile locations and pack them with explosives then set them off.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton isn’t worried about that happening here.

“I’ve never even thought about it, to be perfectly honest,” Stanton said. “I know our police department would be on it if they were.”

“Food truck Fridays and food trucks are a benefit to our city,” Stanton said.

“They create a fun, interactive communal environment. The pizza food truck, with the Mexican food truck, with the Short Leash — which is the greatest hot dogs in town — may be more of a threat to our Healthy Phoenix Initiative, where we’re trying to get people to eat right. But it’s great food.”
