Food trucks gaining ground as lunch options

PHOENIX — When it’s time for lunch, more and more people are heading for the nearest food truck.

Hundreds of people come to food truck Fridays in downtown Phoenix. Numerous trucks set up shop near Central Avenue and Pierce Street to serve hungry customers.

“I usually stick with the Filipino food or the catfish,” said Joan Butler, a regular customer.

For Mary Smith, it was her first time ordering lunch from a food truck. She said her pulled pork sandwich was “very, very good.”

More people are getting into the food truck business and they’re becoming more popular, thanks in part to the “Food Truck Wars” cable-TV show.

“It is a lot of hard work, but it is a blast,” said Tanya Saidi, who runs the “Mama Toledo’s Pies and Homemade desserts” truck.

“I get to create my product. People love what I’ve got to offer, so that makes it even better. I don’t have to listen to anybody and nobody’s my boss but me.”

Saidi said the popularity of food trucks in the Valley is catching up with the rest of the country.

“It hit here in Phoenix last,” said Saidi. “It was popular all over in other big cities, but it hit Phoenix last.”
