Food bank taking donations at Arizona Cardinals game

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It’s Monday Night Football as the Arizona Cardinals host the San Francisco 49ers Monday night at University of Phoenix Stadium.

A valley charity is hoping to cash in on the big game.

St. Mary’s Food Bank is hoping you’ll bring some non-pershible food items to the game…to donate.

“We’ll be outside at all of the gates before the game,” said food bank spokesman Jerry Brown. “It’s a chance for everybody to help feed the hungry for the holidays this year.”

Appearing on KTAR’s “Arizona’s Morning News Weekend with Gayle Bass and Bob McClay”, Brown said the food bank needs one item in particular.

“We had to pull about 46,000 jars of peanut butter from our shelves because of the peanut butter recall,” Brown said. “Those are not in our emergency food boxes right now. It’s really one of our superstar items, because you have to refrigerate it. You don’t have to heat it. It makes a lot of sandwiches. Peanut butter is really high on our list.”

Brown said the food bank will also accept cash.

“For every dollar we receive, we’re able to turn that into seven meals into the community,” Brown said. “This game is sold out, with 70,000 people expected. If everybody brought a dollar, we’d be able to feed a half a million people.”

Brown said this drive is especially important because St. Mary’s food supplies are down 40 percent from last year.

We want to hear from you.
