PEORIA, Ariz. — The Valley is becoming a hotbed for private universities and Peoria is getting a slice of the pie.
Indiana-based Trine University will open a Peoria branch early next year at 83rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
Scott Whyte with the City of Peoria said it’s the city’s first university and it will be a huge economic engine pumping $65 million into Peoria’s economy in five years. The venture will bring almost a quarter of a billion dollars into the Valley economy in the next decade.
“That’s the power of the university in dollars and cents and it’s also the power of a university in promoting and supporting innovation. That’s what we’re trying to here is to create Peoria’s innovation economy.”
By 2018 Trine will be home to more than 3,000 engineering students.
Whyte said more universities could be on the way.
“We’re working now with St. Scholastica out of Minnesota as well as Huntington University in Indiana.”
