Greer Lodge bouncing back after fires

One of the favorite in-state vacation spots for many Arizonans has rebounded from a devastating year.

In May of 2011 someone set fire to the Greer Lodge. “The main lodge, which was sort of the icon of the place, unfortunately burned to the ground,” said the lodge’s general manager Michael Weig.

Three weeks later, Greer had to be evacuated because of the Wallow Fire.

Fortunately, all of the cabins were saved. “We still have the 58 cabins,” said Weig. “They accommodate anywhere from two guests in our smallest cabin to 32 guests in our largest.”

No arrests have been made in the arson case. Weig said the lodge owners are still waiting for an insurance settlement, and they don’t know whether the main lodge will be rebuilt.

Weig said some creative marketing brought a lot of customers back. “As an example, we have the Halloween- after-dark weekends, we had a fall fishing and football promotion. We have hunter’s hideaway. Of course, we have the fall colors, and we have a girls’ full escape weekend.”

Now, just over a year later, Greer Lodge is doing great. It won TripAdvisors’ 2012 Certificate of Excellence. With kayaking, fishing and other activities available, Weig said people know it’s still a great place to get away.

“They come here to walk around the ponds, do a little kayaking and fishing,” Weig said.

Right now, visitors are enjoying the fall colors. Weig is also hoping for an early snow that will send skiers to the lodge and the nearby Sunrise Ski Resort.
