PHOENIX — Flu season is just around the corner and certain foods can keep a body healthy all year.
Registered dietitian Christine Hicks with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health said people should boost their immune system sooner rather than later.
“By having good nutrition throughout the year and eating healthy foods, you can keep your body in shape and prevent the flu, or help your body get over it quicker,” she said.
Hicks said a nutrient-rich diet can make a difference.
“Vitamin A helps the growth and repair of your body tissue. Vitamin C is known to boost your immune system.”
For those who don’t like oranges, kiwis are a good source for Vitamin C. Vitamin A can be found in carrots, squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables and cantaloupe.
Some naturopathic flu supplements include elderberry extract and zinc.
The flu usually starts spreading around the Valley in December and lasts well in to the new year.
