PHOENIX — Political attack TV ads are non-stop these days. They all have a message from one of the candidates saying that they “approve this message.”
“You see candidates approving messages that are ridiculous and over the top and factually incorrect,” Valley political consultant Stan Barnes said. “That doesn’t stop anybody from attaching their name to it.”
Barnes said a federal law requiring the candidates to approve their campaign ads was intended to make them honest. It hasn’t worked.
“Maybe it’s time that we rewrote the federal campaign law and removed the need to repeat those ridiculous words that everyone knows are useless and take up campaign time,” Barnes said.
Meanwhile, Barnes said that negative campaign ads are effective and are here to stay until election day.
