A 1-year-old girl was found wandering in Surprise near Bell Road and Cotton Lane on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the girl has followed her mother out to check the mail when she wandered away.
Surprise Lt. John Bacon said both parents are deaf and mute and did not notice the girl leaving the home.
“The dad did come forth to the fire department,” he said. “Fire personnel did have a person who was proficient in sign language and was able to communicate that he was, in fact, the father. The mom showed up moments later and the child was actually reunited with mom and dad at that point.”
Bacon said the girl was found by a neighbor. She had cuts and bruises on her feet from walking on some rocks.
