A 4-year-old Glendale girl received an award from the Glendale Fire and Police Department for saving a relative’s life during an August bee attack.
Betty Gerard, 78, was attacked by Africanized bees outside of her home. Her granddaughter, Whitney Gerard, exited the home to see what was happening.
Betty Gerard was able to get her granddaughter back in the home and cover her with a blanket. Despite being stung over 200 times, Whitney Gerard had the awareness to press her grandmother’s Life Alert and authorities arrived shortly after.
“I’m very proud of her,” said Cindy Chrisman, Whitney’s mother.
Firefighters said Betty Gerard’s actions, as well as Whitney’s, saved each other’s lives and the fact that Whitney is only four makes her actions even more valiant.
