PHOENIX — Echo Canyon on Camelback Mountain is going to undergo changes starting early next year.
According to David Metzler of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve Committee, construction will begin in January or February to put in additional parking spots. Hikers may not be able to get on the trails for six to nine months.
“It’s definitely needed. This is a congested area and people have been voicing concerns for a long time. It won’t cure the congestion but it will help circulate people through here quicker,” Metzler said.
David Parker, who is a frequent hiker, said the new parking may make things worse by bringing in more crowds.
“More people might be more of a hassle. We obviously won’t know until it happens.”
