PHOENIX — A new name will officially appear in lights in downtown Phoenix in early October — Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The changeover from US Airways Center will take place Oct. 7, the Phoenix Suns and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community announced Thursday.
It will be the third name for the arena, which opened in 1992 as America West Arena as home to the Suns. By 2006, the building had become US Airways Center, after the airlines merged.
Since then, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers have also been calling the place home. Early in their tenure, the Arizona Coyotes played there before moving to Glendale.
The building hosts about 130 events a year, including concerts, tennis matches, conferences, private events and ice shows.
