September is busy month for vasectomies

PHOENIX — We’ve heard the stories that a lot of men get a vasectomy during “March Madness” so they can sit back and watch basketball while they heal.
But September is also a busy time of year for the procedure.
“I’ve seen more consults in these past few weeks than I ever have, and I have a very busy practice in that regard,” Phoenix urologist Dr. Al Borhan said.
He said business is up 10-20 percent. It’s because a lot of couples have babies in September then decide “enough is enough.”
“Either the husband decides or is persuaded by his wife, who has just gone through a long pregnancy, that it’s time to get the ‘snip-snip’,” Borhan said. “I used the word ‘snip-snip’ because it’s a very minor procedure.”
Borhan said another reason men are having vasectomies is because of the economy.
“They set a budget and they decide that with the number of children that they have at the current time, it really wouldn’t be feasible to have more kids,” Borhan said.
“They choose this as a time to make a definitive decision on that.”
Borhan said being in a recession is a bad reason to have a vasectomy. He tells couples that economies are cyclical, and they may want to use birth control until the economy gets better because they may want to have more kids once the economy improves.
