After the attacks on 9/11, Chandler firefighters wanted to honor the victims in their own way. The department applied for a steel beam from one of the towers.
Chandler Fire’s Tom Carlson said they received the 400-pound, five-foot piece of rusted metal about eight months ago, and built their own memorial.
According to Fire Chief Brad Miller, the ceremony dedicating the beam and plaque was timed to when the towers were stuck Eastern Standard Time. A moment of silence was scheduled at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m.
“The bottom is a boiler plate, but it’s shaped as a pentagon. Then we have the two more or less symbolizing the towers, holding the beam up,” said Carlson.
The plaque explains that this memorial is a constant reminder not just for the 343 firefighters who lost their lives, but for the nearly 3,000 other people who died in the attacks.
Carlson said the plaques will mention all three sites.
