A dust explosion at a Phoenix design business gave second- and third-degree burns to two workers on Monday.
Scott McDonald with the Phoenix Fire Department said the workers were in the attic and the roof of the building of Rockhard Design and Surfaces, located near McDowell Rd. and Interstate 17, when the explosion occurred.
“They were cleaning up years’ worth of old dust from an old door manufacturing company, real fine sawdust,” he said. “As they were cleaning that up, somehow it became an ignition source and all that sawdust in the air exploded.”
After the explosion, the workers fell though the roof into offices below.
A third worker was also injured, but he refused medical treatment.
The source of the explosion is unknown.
